This is the main touristic city in Argentine Patagonia, with a population of 140,000.

San Carlos de Bariloche is located in Patagonia, 1,640 km (1,020 mi) South East of Buenos Aires city, close to the border with Chile. It’s the biggest city in the province of Río Negro.

It extends over the south coast of Nahuel Huapi Lake (one of the biggest lakes in Patagonia), surprising visitors with the beauty of its landscapes and the various entertainment and touring possibilities it offers.

Year round, in all four seasons, it welcomes visitors from all over the world, offering them an excellent hotel network and an ample variety of dining alternatives.

You and your family can enjoy many tourist activities and excursions. In winter, you can visit Mt. Catedral, the most important and famous ski resort in South America, where you can ski and perform other winter sports.

In summer, adventure plays a leading role: white-water rafting, hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, paragliding, etc. Make a point to go on a lake excursion on Nahuel Huapi Lake, you will get to unique places in the world like the Arrayán Forest and Victoria Island.

You can also profit from being so close to Mt. Tronador, Puerto Pañuelo, Puerto Blest, Los Alerces Fall and the Llao Llao Peninsula, all included in a tour usually referred to as Circuito Chico (short circuit) by the travel agents in the area.

The touristic area of the city develops around the Civic Center, completely designed in wood and stone. This is the classic meeting point for the locals and tourists. Around the main square you will find the Police Station building, the former Post Office (today made into an exhibits' hall), the Municipal Tourism Secretariat, the Town Hall, the Museum of Patagonia and the Sarmiento Library, that includes a theatre room and a conference room. In Puerto San Carlos, you can go ice skating in the rink while you enjoy the amazing views of the Nahuel Huapi Lake through the huge picture windows.

Downtown, walking along the two main streets, Mitre and Moreno, you can find several stores where you can buy chocolate, smoked cold meats and fish, knitted crafts, etc. There are also many nice restaurants, travel agencies, entertainment centers. In this first class tourist city, you will be able to find everything you are looking for.

Just a few blocks away from the Civic Center, you can visit Nuestra Señora del Nahuel Huapi Cathedral. It was built in 1946, and it belongs to the Administration of the National Park. It has been declared National Historic Monument.
